Just over 20 years ago, the City of Milwaukee decided to rediscover its watery heritage with the creation of the Milwaukee RiverWalk that has turned the Milwaukee River into a prominent downtown development area with a mix of high-end residential, commercial and recreational uses. The RiverWalk spans nearly three miles along the Milwaukee River through the heart of the City's Downtown area.

In 2010, Erie Street Plaza, a small urban plaza in the historic Third Ward district of Milwaukee, was completed. The Plaza represented the final link in a series of public space revitalization efforts along the RiverWalk.
